Melatonin :(

Bash away, but I had to do it, I was/am at my wits end. After everything I've read about Melatonin I decided to give it a try. My kids are little terrors during the day from lack of sleep. I would put them to bed at 8pm and at 10-11pm they would still be wide awake and bouncing off the walls. Not good when the poor things have to be up at 6am to get ready to go to school. The speed in which that stuff worked actually scared me. I was told to give it to them half an hour before bedtime, so at 7:30pm I gave them each one (except my two youngest, they have no problems sleeping). I dimmed the lights, sat them on the couch and put in a cartoon with the volume low in hopes of calming them down before bedtime. 15 minutes later they were dead asleep right there on the couch :O If I knew it was going to work that fast, I would have put them right in bed. I can see why some parents like it so much and convince themselves that it's a supplement and not a "drug" but it still doesn't make me comfortable about it. From now on it will be an every once in a while thing, definitely not every night, or even every week. Unless it's absolutely needed, it will stay in the medicine cabinet. Natural or not, it's scary stuff.........

Well, honey! Don't feel bad! You did what you needed to do! How did they feel this morning?

Is it liquid?

I don't normally have sleep problems with either girls, but I wouldn't mind having some on hand just in case.

I have thought about getting some Calmasaurus from the health food store for BLM when she has hyper times.

*Disclaimer* I'm posting anonymous because I can't remember my password, grr....

I bought mine on ebay (oh the shame!), they're chewable tablets. When I was searching the listings I did see a liquid form. I almost bought it, but then had visions of my kids spitting it out all over the place, lol. The tablets are peperment flavor, so they think they're getting a treat :P

I am posting anonymous because I am too lazy to set up an account...

I give my kids one - sometimes 2- tablet every night at 7 pm. It is common in more 'active' children (read: ADD, ADHD, high energy, etc) for their bodies to not produce enough melatonin to regulate their rest/awake times. I promise, adding the melatonin is a good thing. You might also consider adding some Omega-3 supplements. I order our melatonin from www.kirkmanlab.com They are cheap. However, shipping may be pricey to you.

No way hose' would I give my children anything that wasn't specifically formulate for them. Talk to your ped about this, seriously. I totally understand your frustration with the kids not sleeping, I've been there. Start watching SuperNanny instead of drugging the little ones.

Fwiw, peds nationwide prescribe melatonin in active kids... I did tons of research and talked to several drs. (including close, personal dr. friends...) It's something your body naturally produces and a large precentage of people just don't make quite enough. My three-year-old has been taking it every night for a year, per her ped... It helps many kids and many parents (it is also prescribed for countless sleep-deprived adults) get a good night's sleep. There is nothing wrong with it at all...

It does work fast. And sometimes, that can be a very good thing... :-) (Just like my three benadryl and liquor...) My daughter is thirty lbs. and can have 3 milligrams. She only needs about 600 micrograms to do the trick, which is just over a half a milligram... ONE milligram. I buy them in 300 mcg. pills and she chews them. Maybe try a smaller dosage... Start out with one 300 mcg. pill or two, and see if it works better for you guys...

Off to work on my nightly sleep inducing regimine... ;-)
